Subject: OK, I'm confused here

I'm confused here: why, if this is a loving, happy religion, do people seem to be obsessed with darkness?? I keep seeing "children of darkness" or "child of the night". What's up with that?? I sense some sort of contradiction here. Please, somebody explain this to me.
