Posted on: 4/5/2000 Name: mowgli... Email: Subject: a couple of comments 1 - That representation of the Pentacle, with Earth Air Fire Water
and Spirit, is just one version of it, one that not all Wiccans
proscribe to (if that is the correct phrasing).
You might want to put in a little note to that effect. Air/ East,
South/Fire, West/Water, and North/Earth, don't really correspond
to the pentacle because its four for five. Spirit
is definitely the fifth element, but many wiccans feel that it belongs
in the CENTER of the pentacle, as that is the transformative part.
The center of the pentacle represents
everything from the cooking cauldron (with wood (earth) fire, water
(in the cauldron) and air (steam) converging to create something
new (like soup or a meal....or the transformation
of the soul after being tempered by heat) To the womb, where all
things grow, and new life is created.
Anyway, the point is, putting in the north is only KIND OF accurate,
and that is only depending on your school of wiccan training.
2 - Also according to my school, the items associated with the directions
are incorrect.....again, that is just my school, but I can give
you a quick rundown on it all so you can
choose what works for you.
East/Air - The beginning of all things, so it's Dawn, or Spring....babyhood.
You name it. It's also where ideas start...every item in the world
that has been created started first
as an idea. The east is in charge of dreaming about things without
actually doing anything yet....it's where you go for help with writer's
block, or when you have no idea what to do
so you can think of your options. It's also in charge of setting
limits for things....drawing a line in the sand and saying, "You
go no further." The tool for the east is
debatable. Some say Sword, some say Wand....but almost all agree
Athame. Apparently it has something to do with the term Athame
meaning "air dagger" and some people drawing their
athame's bigger than others.....or something like that. The tool
for the east has become interchangeable, some use one, some use
the other. I personally feel that wand is
appropriate. Colors are the yellows and greens of spring, lemon
yellow, spring green, that kind of stuff. South/Fire - The summit of things, so it's noon, or summer, or adolescence.
It's where dreams become reality...where you take the idea from
the east and breathe life into it. It's
in charge of willpower, personal strength, endurance. The tool,
again, is debatable between wand and sword, but I say sword. Sword
just seems to match more with fire....Colors are
the reds and yellows of fire. West/Water - The waning of things, so it's Sunset, Fall, Middle
to Old Age. It's where you take the thing that you've created and
you enjoy it. It's forgiveness and mercy and
love....the quieter more peaceful emotions....and emotion in general,
(though anger seems to go more in the south with fire....). It's
the ability to heal oneself and others...it's
beautiful and sad. Tool is chalice or cup, pretty universally,
seeing as it holds water and all.... North/Earth - The north is kind of like limbo...it's Death, so it's
Midnight, winter, Death. It's the place of the mysteries...the
place where you learn what NOT to say. Tool is
pentacle. Colors are earth browns, blacks, sometimes forest greens.
The gods live in the north....like the north pole, it's dark for
6 months of the year...very serious and
mysterious. 3 - Items like "Power" or "Knowledge".....it would be nice if you
could have a little applet or something to give a definition to
them. For instance, "power" is PERSONAL power, not
power OVER someone, or power WITH someone....it has nothing to do
with bending anyone's will. It has to do with how strong of a person
you are. "Knowledge" can be learned or
taught...."Wisdom" can only be learned through experience...it canNOT
be taught....wisdom is how you learn to apply your knowledge...etc. Just my personal little soapbox, I guess. You're welcome to it.
